The Nymphaeum of Herodes Atticus is a semi-circular monument that was built in 160 AD by the wealthy Athenian of the same name, to collect water from a spring. Emphasising its two basins, one above the other, it had niches containing statues of the imperial family and Herodes Atticus and his wife Regilla, who was priestess of Demeter Chamyne at the time of the Olympic Games in the year 153.
