These majestic, impressive ruins open to the sky are all that remains of the Cistercian abbey of San Galgano, which was built in Romanesque-Gothic style between 1218 and 1288 in honour of St Galgano (1148-1181). The first Gothic church in Tuscany, it inspired the construction of the cathedral in Siena. The abbey is typical of a Cistercian monastery, although only a section of the cloisters, the chapter house and scriptorium can still be admired today.
